SUMMARY: Having separate passwords for the SAP ONE Support Launchpad and the SAP Download Manager (DLM) is a thing of the past thanks to the new Download Basket. Get prepared by consolidating your basket and installing the newest DLM version.Last October, I explained in a why you may end up having to memorize two different passwords to access the SAP support infrastructure: In addition to the modern applications housed in the launchpad, there are still some old support tools hosted on a legacy platform.Today, I have got good news for you: SAP is about to significantly reduce the number of touchpoints with that old infrastructure. On March 24th, 2018, the new Download Basket will become mandatory for all users. The Download Basket is the list of software files that you selected on your journey through the SAP Software Download Center, and that you intend to download with the help of the SAP Download Manager.
Until recently, basket and files were hosted on the service.sap.com platform (SAP Service Marketplace). It is this very platform that does not support state-of-the-art passwords. So, to cut a long story short: Once you start using the new Download Basket, you can use your modern launchpad password to download software files. And you don’t have to wait until March 24th.To make the transition easy for you, the user interface of the Download Basket will not change, nor will its URL. Furthermore, most items in your current Download Basket will be migrated to the new one.
However, to start with a clean slate, download objects that were added before 2017 will no longer be shown in the new list. (Quite frankly, why would anyone add something to their basket, and then let it sit there and go stale for more than a year?) What you should do nowA bit of housekeeping is required:. Check your Download Basket for pre-2017 files that you may have forgotten to download. If you use the SAP Download Manager to retrieve software files from the basket, make sure you run the most recent version. How to do this? Just follow these easy steps:.
to check if it contains any files from 2016 or before. If it does, you can either download or delete them:. Download all still relevant files, either one-by-one by clicking the title, or through mass download using the SAP Download Manager. Use the checkboxes to mark those files that you are not interested in, and click the Delete icon (X) to remove them from the basket.
Or don’t do anything at all: In the new Download Basket, old files won’t show up anyway. There is no rush to download items that you added in 2017 or 2018. They will be listed in your new Download Basket. Make sure that you have version 3.1.1.patch1 of the SAP Download Manager installed on your local computer. To do so, start the tool, then click Help About SAP Download Manager.
If you run a version older than 3.1.1.patch1,. Finally, you have to make sure that the SAP Download Manager connects to the new file storage system.
In the tool’s menu bar, click View, then Download Manager Configuration, and select the Connection tab. Enter the address Do not use the address anymore!. From now on, if you log on, use your S-user ID and – important! – your SAP ONE Support Launchpad password.Again: You do not have to wait until March 24th to benefit from using the same password for launchpad and Download Manager. You can perform all steps straightaway and start using the new file storage system today. Piloting Program SAP ONE Support LaunchpadWe invite interested customers and partners to a special piloting program for the SAP ONE Support Launchpad.
In this program, we offer roll-out and feedback sessions. We present new functionality that has become available since the previous release; give an outlook and insight on what we are currently working on; and collect and discuss feedback and ideas with participants. Sessions are held every 6-8 weeks. All interested parties can participate without obligations. The only prerequisite is a valid Feedback Agreement with SAP.In case you would like to be involved and invited to future sessions, simply send an email to my colleague containing your name, S-user ID, e-mail address, and the name of your company. HiDue to the traditional issues with having to re-authenticate many times and the annoying time-outs in the Launchpad I and many people use the SAP Passport. Then each time I use the Download Manager I have to find/remember the password, which usually leads to having to reset the password.Could some mechanism be used to include/add the SAP Passport to the Download Manager?Does this new Download Manager remember ones settings and inputs as the last one did not which was also very annoying? Thanks Derek.
Hi Derek,Thanks for the great suggestion. I will investigate what’s possible and come back to you. Right now, the SAP Download Manager does not support single sign-on. I am not sure if this can be changed as the certificate is stored in a separate tool, your web browser. But we will see.The SAP Download Manager, not only the most recent version, but already older ones, does not store your password anymore due to security concerns and regulations. That’s why only your S-user ID (and of course all connection settings) is stored for the next session.Best regards,Peter.
Hi Peter, Yes its the “Download store” location that does not save. But it is saving for some of us ? so its probably an issue with the Server Login. We have a Win Server that runs in the SAP Network that we use to run most of our tasks expecially long running tasks, everone has their own server logon, but all use the same DLM.jar file and for some the Download Store loaction saves and for others, like me it does not. Also noticed that for those of us that it dose not save, the DLM always starts up like a new install, as in the config stage, and for those that it does save it starts with the logon credentials entry. So thanks anyways that issue seems just local to our setup.
Dear Dimitar,Thanks for your feedback. The more recent versions of the SAP Download Manager have got a self-update feature. But I agree: because the SAP Download Manager is an optional and complimentary tool that customers don’t have to use — direct download or 3rd party download managers will do –, the focus of our product planning and delivery certainly hasn’t been on this application. Still, if you experience technical problems, these shouldn’t occur, and I suggest that next time you report an incident using component XX-SER-SAPSMP-SDM.As mentioned in another reply (see above), you are very welcome to and help shape the next generation of SAP support tools. Thanks and best regards,Peter. Imho the DML has worked GREAT, and I suppose for many customers it has.We use it on a solution manager server (aix, so its the java version) and just have to update the software – and reset the user profile in the home directory to make it Work, if any issues.Internal proxies and firewalls are the issue, not the software. ?BTW, if we can request something here, it could be that the download basket list, could mark items and delete several items. Its not possible in the java version, only one item at the time – we have to go thrugh the basket via launchpad to delete multiple items.
I’m not sold on the advantage of the Download Manager requiring my Launchpad password. The attack surface of the download manager is much larger than most other tools that require me authenticating to SAP, because the Download Manager needs to run where I want the software to be, which is usually shared machines. Feature request: give me a way to have multiple “tokens” that can carry different entitlements. My current solution to that problem is a special-purpose “download user”, who can only “Download Software”. Hi Peter,Thank you very much for your comment. I got the URL from your post.
I tried the one on your latest comment as well and I got the “This page can’t be displayed”.To give you more details, I’m building a test server from scratch so I installed a fresh copy of Windows 2008 Server. Now, I know that this issue is not due to an Internet Explorer settings because I was able to download Microsoft’s SQL Server Express, Java and Acrobat Reader using this new system with no problems at all.So, after two days of trying a lot of trick I finally took an old Laptop with Windows Vista and a Chrome browser and I was able to download SAP’s Download Manager. That said, it is not a security protocol issue because I know Windows Vista does not support the latest SSL protocols.I also know it is not a firewall issue because, once I installed SAP’s Download Manager in my fresh Windows 2008 System I was able to download SAP 9.3.Most likely, the SAP download page has a javascript issue with all that double prompt security process.Best Regards,Manuel.

Hi Manuel,That’s a strange phenomenon, and I have never heard about it before. The URL in my post and initial response to your comment points to an SAP Support Portal page — not the actual download site in the SAP ONE Support Launchpad. That portal is hosted on the same infrastructure (and basically uses the same JavaScript libraries) as SAP.com, our public website. Can you access its homepage?I assume you have tried refreshing (without pulling content from the browser cache) using CTRL-R?
I also assume that your proxy admin doesn’t block SAP.com webpages?Best regards,Peter. Hi Peter,Ok, granted, I was not specific enough, and I think I have caused a miscommunication (again, I was able to download it using Windows Vista). Your download link, automatically redirects me to: – That page works. On that page, if you scroll down, there is a section about downloading the SAP download manager. That section has the following link:.
That last link sends me to a page that asks my “s” User ID twice, and then finally it tells me that “this page can’t be displayed” error. Now, I know it is not my “SAP partner” user ID because I was able to download the SAP download Manager using Windows Vista. I also tested it using Windows 10 and it also works. It must be a javascript bug.
